Achalasia

Description

A rare disorder that makes it difficult for food and liquid to pass from the swallowing tube connecting the mouth and stomach (esophagus) into the stomach. It occurs when nerves in the esophagus become damaged, preventing the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) from relaxing.

Common Symptoms

  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), feeling as if food is stuck in the chest
  • Regurgitation of food
  • Chest pain
  • Heartburn
  • Weight loss

Common Causes

  • The cause is unknown, but it is thought to be an autoimmune condition where the immune system damages the nerves in the esophagus.

Treatment Information

There is no cure, but treatments aim to relax or force open the lower esophageal sphincter. Options include pneumatic dilation (stretching the sphincter with a balloon), surgery (Heller myotomy), or Botox injections.
