Acromegaly and Gigantism
Description
A hormonal disorder that results from too much growth hormone (GH) in the body. In adults, this condition is called acromegaly, leading to enlargement of bones in the hands, feet, and face. In children, it is called gigantism and causes excessive growth in height.
Common Symptoms
- Enlarged hands and feet
- Changes in facial features (protruding jaw, enlarged nose)
- Coarsened, oily, thickened skin
- Deepening of the voice
- Joint pain
- Headaches
- Vision problems
Common Causes
- The most common cause is a noncancerous (benign) tumor of the pituitary gland (pituitary adenoma) that secretes excess GH.
Treatment Information
Treatment involves surgery to remove the tumor, medication to lower GH levels, and radiation therapy.
