Addison's Disease
Description
Also known as primary adrenal insufficiency, this is a rare disorder that occurs when the adrenal glands, located on top of the kidneys, do not produce enough of the hormones cortisol and aldosterone.
Common Symptoms
- Extreme fatigue
- Weight loss and decreased appetite
- Darkening of your skin (hyperpigmentation)
- Low blood pressure (hypotension)
- Salt craving
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
- Nausea, diarrhea or vomiting
Common Causes
- The most common cause is an autoimmune response that destroys the adrenal cortex. Other causes include infections like tuberculosis.
Treatment Information
Lifelong hormone replacement therapy with oral corticosteroids (like hydrocortisone for cortisol and fludrocortisone for aldosterone).
