Adrenal Insufficiency
Description
A disorder in which the adrenal glands don't produce enough of certain hormones. Primary adrenal insufficiency is known as Addison's disease. Secondary adrenal insufficiency occurs when the pituitary gland doesn't produce enough adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).
Common Symptoms
- Chronic fatigue
- Muscle weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Abdominal pain
- Low blood pressure
Common Causes
- Autoimmune disease (for primary), or lack of ACTH from the pituitary gland due to tumors, inflammation, or surgery (for secondary).
Treatment Information
Hormone replacement therapy to replace the hormones the adrenal glands are not making.
