Altitude Sickness
Description
A group of symptoms that can strike if you walk or climb to a higher elevation, or altitude, too quickly. The pressure of the air that surrounds you is lower at higher altitudes, meaning there is less available oxygen.
Common Symptoms
- Mild (Acute Mountain Sickness - AMS): Headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath.
- Severe (HAPE/HACE): Worsening shortness of breath at rest, cough, confusion, inability to walk.
Common Causes
- Rapid ascent to high altitudes without giving the body enough time to adjust to the reduced oxygen levels.
Treatment Information
The best treatment is to descend to a lower altitude immediately. For mild cases, rest and pain relievers may be enough. Severe cases are medical emergencies and require oxygen and medication.
