Amyloidosis

Description

A rare disease that occurs when a substance called amyloid, an abnormal protein, builds up in organs. Amyloid is not normally found in the body, but it can be formed from several different types of protein. This buildup can make it difficult for the organs to work properly.

Common Symptoms

  • Symptoms are varied and depend on the organs affected. They can include severe fatigue, weight loss, swelling of the ankles and legs, shortness of breath, numbness in the hands or feet, and an enlarged tongue.

Common Causes

  • Caused by the buildup of specific misfolded proteins. Types include AL amyloidosis (related to plasma cells), AA amyloidosis (related to chronic inflammatory diseases), and hereditary amyloidosis.

Treatment Information

Treatment is complex and aims to stop the production of the abnormal protein and support organ function. It may involve chemotherapy, targeted therapies, or organ transplants.
