Anal Cancer
Description
An uncommon type of cancer that occurs in the anal canal, a short tube at the end of the rectum through which stool leaves the body. It is distinct from colorectal cancer.
Common Symptoms
- Bleeding from the anus or rectum
- Pain in the anal area
- A lump or mass at the anal opening
- Anal itching
- A change in bowel habits, such as narrowing of the stool
Common Causes
- Strongly associated with infection by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Other risk factors include having many sexual partners, a weakened immune system, and smoking.
Treatment Information
Most anal cancers are treated effectively with a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy (chemoradiation). Surgery is used less often as a primary treatment but may be needed for residual disease.
