Ankylosing Spondylitis
Description
A type of inflammatory arthritis that, over time, can cause some of the small bones in the spine (vertebrae) to fuse. This fusing makes the spine less flexible and can result in a hunched-forward posture. It primarily affects the spine but can also cause inflammation in other parts of the body.
Common Symptoms
- Chronic pain and stiffness in the lower back and hips, especially in the morning and after periods of inactivity
- Pain in the ligaments and tendons (enthesitis)
- Fatigue
- Inflammation of the eyes (uveitis)
Common Causes
- The cause is unknown, but genetic factors seem to be involved. Nearly all people with the condition have a gene called HLA-B27.
Treatment Information
Treatment includes physical therapy, NSAIDs, and biologic drugs (TNF inhibitors and IL-17 inhibitors) to reduce inflammation and pain.
