Anosmia (Loss of Smell)
Description
The partial or complete loss of the sense of smell. This loss may be temporary or permanent. Because taste is closely linked to smell, people with anosmia often report that food tastes bland.
Common Symptoms
- Inability to detect odors.
Common Causes
- Can be caused by a nasal or sinus blockage (like from a cold or allergies), a head injury, viral infections (including COVID-19), nasal polyps, or aging.
Treatment Information
Treatment depends on the cause. If caused by an infection or allergy, it may resolve on its own or with treatment of the underlying condition. There is no treatment if it is due to aging.
