Description
A serious infectious disease caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis. It occurs naturally in soil and commonly affects domestic and wild animals around the world. People can get sick with anthrax if they come in contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.
Common Symptoms
- Cutaneous (skin): A group of small blisters or bumps that may itch, followed by a painless skin sore with a black center.
- Inhalation: Flu-like symptoms that rapidly progress to severe breathing problems and shock.
- Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and severe, bloody diarrhea.
Common Causes
- Exposure to Bacillus anthracis spores, through the skin, inhalation, or ingestion.
