Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis)
Description
A fungal infection that usually begins between the toes. It commonly occurs in people whose feet have become very sweaty while confined within tight-fitting shoes.
Common Symptoms
- A scaly, peeling, or cracked rash between the toes.
- Itching, stinging, and burning.
- Blisters or ulcers in some cases.
Common Causes
- Caused by the same type of fungi that causes ringworm and jock itch. Damp socks and shoes and warm, humid conditions favor the organisms' growth.
Treatment Information
Effectively treated with over-the-counter topical antifungal medications. Prescription-strength medications may be needed for persistent infections.
