Autoimmune Hepatitis
Description
A chronic disease in which the body's own immune system attacks the liver and causes it to become inflamed. The disease is chronic and, if untreated, can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure.

Common Causes
- The body's immune system mistakes normal liver cells for harmful invaders and makes antibodies that attack the cells. The exact cause of this abnormal immune response is unknown.
Treatment Information
Treatment aims to stop the body's immune attack and involves medications that suppress the immune system, primarily corticosteroids (prednisone) and azathioprine.
