Description
A common type of cancer that begins in the cells of the bladder. It most often begins in the cells (urothelial cells) that line the inside of your bladder. It typically affects older adults, though it can occur at any age.
Common Symptoms
- Blood in urine (hematuria), which may cause urine to appear bright red or cola-colored
- Frequent urination
- Painful urination
- Back pain
Common Causes
- The exact cause isn't always clear. Smoking is a major risk factor. Other risks include chemical exposure, chronic bladder inflammation, and being male.
Treatment Information
Treatment options depend on the stage and may include surgery to remove cancer cells, chemotherapy within the bladder (intravesical), systemic chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy.
