Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
Description
A mental health condition in which you can't stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in your appearance — a flaw that appears minor or can't be seen by others. The perceived flaw and the repetitive behaviors cause significant distress and impact your ability to function in your daily life.
Common Symptoms
- Being extremely preoccupied with a perceived flaw in appearance
- Strong belief that you have a defect in your appearance that makes you ugly or deformed
- Frequent examination of yourself in the mirror or complete avoidance of mirrors
- Attempting to hide perceived flaws with styling, makeup, or clothes
- Seeking frequent cosmetic procedures with little satisfaction
Common Causes
- The exact cause is not known, but brain differences, genes, and environment are thought to play a role.
Treatment Information
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medications (SSRIs) are the most common treatments.
