Bone Fracture
Description
A medical condition in which there is a partial or complete break in the continuity of the bone. In more severe cases, the bone may be broken into several pieces. A fracture can result from high force impact or stress, or a trivial injury as a result of a medical condition that weakens the bones, such as osteoporosis.
Common Symptoms
- Severe pain
- Swelling and tenderness
- Bruising
- Deformity of the limb
- Inability to put weight on or use the affected limb
Common Causes
- Trauma from falls, motor vehicle accidents, or sports injuries. Pathological fractures can be caused by conditions like osteoporosis or cancer.
Treatment Information
Immobilization with a cast or splint is most common. Some fractures may require surgery to place plates, screws, or rods to hold the bone in place (open reduction and internal fixation).
