Botulism
Description
A rare but serious illness caused by a toxin that attacks the body's nerves and causes difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death. The toxin is made by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
Common Symptoms
- Difficulty swallowing or speaking
- Dry mouth
- Facial weakness on both sides of the face
- Blurred or double vision
- Drooping eyelids
- Trouble breathing
- Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps (in foodborne botulism)
- Paralysis.
Common Causes
- Ingestion of toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria, often from improperly canned or preserved food (foodborne botulism), or from a wound infected with the bacteria (wound botulism).
Treatment Information
A medical emergency requiring hospitalization. Treatment includes an antitoxin to block the toxin's action and supportive care, often including mechanical ventilation.
