Bronchiectasis
Description
A long-term condition where the airways of the lungs become abnormally widened, leading to a buildup of excess mucus that can make the lungs more vulnerable to infection. The lung damage is permanent.
Common Symptoms
- A persistent cough that brings up a large amount of phlegm (sputum) on a daily basis
- Shortness of breath
- Recurrent chest infections
- Fatigue
- Wheezing
Common Causes
- Can be caused by a previous severe lung infection (like pneumonia or tuberculosis), an underlying genetic condition (like cystic fibrosis), or a problem with the immune system.
Treatment Information
Treatment focuses on controlling infections and clearing mucus from the airways through daily airway clearance techniques, antibiotics, and bronchodilators.
