Burn
Description
Tissue damage that results from heat, overexposure to the sun or other radiation, or chemical or electrical contact. Burns can be minor medical problems or life-threatening emergencies. The severity is graded by depth (first, second, third, or fourth degree).
Common Symptoms
- Redness
- Pain
- Blisters
- Swelling
- Peeling skin
- In severe cases: white, leathery, or charred skin and numbness.
Common Causes
- Thermal (heat from fire, steam, hot liquids), chemical, electrical, and radiation (including sunburn).
Treatment Information
Depends on severity. Minor burns can be treated with cool water and aloe vera. More severe burns require immediate medical care for cleaning, sterile dressings, antibiotics, pain management, and possibly skin grafting.
