Candidiasis
Description
A fungal infection caused by a yeast (a type of fungus) called Candida. Candida normally lives on the skin and inside the body without causing problems. However, it can multiply and cause an infection if the environment inside the body changes in a way that encourages its growth.
Common Symptoms
- Thrush (oral): White patches on the tongue, inner cheeks, and throat.
- Yeast Infection (vaginal): Itching, soreness, and a thick, white discharge.
- Invasive candidiasis (in the bloodstream): Fever and chills.
Common Causes
- Overgrowth of Candida yeast. Risk factors include antibiotic use, weakened immune systems, and diabetes.
Treatment Information
Treated with antifungal medications, which can be topical (creams) or systemic (oral or IV).
