Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Description

A condition that causes numbness, tingling, and other symptoms in the hand and arm. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by a compressed median nerve in the carpal tunnel, a narrow passageway on the palm side of your wrist.

Common Symptoms

  • Tingling or numbness in your fingers or hand (especially thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers)
  • Weakness in your hand and a tendency to drop objects
  • Pain that may radiate up the arm

Common Causes

  • Often the result of a combination of factors that increase pressure on the median nerve, including wrist anatomy, repetitive hand use, and certain health problems like arthritis.

Treatment Information

Wrist splinting, NSAIDs, and corticosteroid injections. Physical therapy and surgery (carpal tunnel release) are options for more severe cases.
