Chagas Disease (American Trypanosomiasis)

Description

An inflammatory, infectious disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. It is spread by the feces of the triatomine bug (kissing bug). If untreated, Chagas disease can later cause serious heart and digestive problems.

Common Symptoms

  • Acute phase: Often asymptomatic or mild symptoms like fever, fatigue, body aches, and swelling at the site of the bite (a "chagoma").
  • Chronic phase: Can lead to serious cardiac complications, including an enlarged heart and heart failure, or digestive problems like an enlarged esophagus or colon.

Common Causes

  • Infection with the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, typically transmitted by the bite and subsequent fecal contamination from a triatomine bug.

Treatment Information

Can be treated with antiparasitic drugs to kill the parasite, especially in the acute phase. In the chronic phase, treatment focuses on managing symptoms and complications.
