Description

A viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. It causes fever and severe joint pain. The joint pain is often debilitating and can vary in duration.

Common Symptoms

  • Abrupt onset of fever frequently accompanied by severe, often debilitating, joint pain. Other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, and rash.

Common Causes

  • Infection with the chikungunya virus, transmitted by the bite of infected Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.

Treatment Information

There is no specific antiviral drug treatment. Treatment is directed primarily at relieving the symptoms, including the joint pain, using anti-pyretics and pain killers.
