A common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria. It can infect both men and women and can cause serious, permanent damage to a woman's reproductive system, making it difficult or impossible for her to get pregnant later on.

Common Symptoms

  • Often asymptomatic ("silent" infection). When symptoms occur, they can include abnormal vaginal discharge or a burning sensation when urinating in women, and discharge from the penis or burning urination in men.

Common Causes

  • Infection with the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, spread through sexual contact.
