Cholera
Description
An acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It can be severe and life-threatening if not treated, causing rapid loss of body fluids leading to dehydration and shock.
Common Symptoms
- Profuse watery diarrhea (often described as "rice-water stools")
- Vomiting
- Rapid heart rate
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Muscle cramps. Severe dehydration can lead to shock and death within hours.

- Ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.
Treatment Information
Immediate rehydration therapy is the cornerstone of treatment, using oral rehydration solution (ORS) or intravenous fluids. Antibiotics can reduce the duration of illness.
