Common Cold
Description
A mild viral infection of the nose and throat (upper respiratory tract). It is extremely common and usually harmless, though it can cause significant discomfort. More than 200 virus strains can cause a cold, but rhinoviruses are the most common culprits.
Common Symptoms
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Congestion
- Sneezing
- Slight body aches or a mild headache
- Low-grade fever
Common Causes
- Infection by one of many types of viruses, most commonly rhinoviruses. Spread through airborne droplets or direct contact with infected secretions.
Treatment Information
No cure exists. Treatment is symptomatic and includes rest, hydration, and over-the-counter medications like decongestants, cough suppressants, and pain relievers.
