Dengue Fever
Description
A mosquito-borne viral infection found in tropical and sub-tropical climates. While most cases are mild, dengue can sometimes evolve into severe dengue, a life-threatening complication.
Common Symptoms
- High fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, severe joint and muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and skin rash. Severe dengue (dengue hemorrhagic fever) can cause serious bleeding and a sudden drop in blood pressure (shock).
Common Causes
- Infection by any one of four related dengue viruses, transmitted by the bite of an infected female Aedes mosquito.
Treatment Information
There is no specific treatment. Patients should rest, stay hydrated, and use pain relievers like acetaminophen. Severe dengue requires hospitalization. A vaccine is available for people who have had dengue before and live in areas where it is common.
