Diphtheria
Description
A serious bacterial infection that usually affects the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. Diphtheria typically causes a sore throat, fever, swollen glands and weakness. Its hallmark sign is a sheet of thick, gray material covering the back of the throat, which can block the airway.
Common Symptoms
- A thick, gray membrane covering the throat and tonsils
- Sore throat and hoarseness
- Swollen glands (bull neck)
- Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
- Fever and chills
- Malaise.
Common Causes
- Infection with toxin-producing strains of the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
Treatment Information
Requires immediate treatment with a diphtheria antitoxin to neutralize the toxin and antibiotics to kill the bacteria. Vaccination (DTaP) is the best way to prevent it.
