Diverticulitis
Description
A condition that occurs when small, bulging pouches (diverticula) that can form in the lining of your digestive system become inflamed or infected. Diverticulitis can cause severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and a marked change in your bowel habits.
Common Symptoms
- Pain, which may be constant and persist for several days, often in the lower left side of the abdomen
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever
- Abdominal tenderness
- Constipation or, less commonly, diarrhea
Common Causes
- Diverticulitis occurs when diverticula tear, resulting in inflammation, and in some cases, infection. The reason for the initial formation of diverticula is thought to be a low-fiber diet.
Treatment Information
Mild cases can be treated with rest, a clear liquid diet, and antibiotics. Severe or recurrent cases may require hospitalization or surgery.
