Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)
Description
A chronic, inflammatory skin condition that results in dry, itchy, and inflamed skin. It is common in children but can occur at any age. Eczema is often associated with other allergic conditions like asthma and hay fever. It is not contagious.
Common Symptoms
- Dry, scaly skin
- Intense itching, especially at night
- Red to brownish-gray patches, especially on the hands, feet, ankles, wrists, neck, and inside the bend of the elbows and knees
- Small, raised bumps, which may leak fluid and crust over when scratched
Common Causes
- A combination of genetic factors (a variation in the gene responsible for creating a protective layer on the skin) and environmental triggers like irritants (soaps, detergents), allergens (pollen, pet dander), and stress.
Treatment Information
Management includes regular moisturizing, topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors to control inflammation, and avoiding personal triggers. Biologic drugs are available for severe cases.
