Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
Description
A group of inherited disorders that affect your connective tissues — primarily your skin, joints, and blood vessel walls. People who have EDS usually have overly flexible joints and stretchy, fragile skin. There are many different types, with the hypermobile type (hEDS) being the most common.
Common Symptoms
- Overly flexible joints (hypermobility)
- Stretchy skin (hyperelasticity)
- Fragile skin that doesn't heal well
- Chronic joint pain
- Easy bruising
- Joint dislocations
Common Causes
- Caused by mutations in one of more than a dozen genes that affect the structure, production, or processing of collagen and related connective tissue proteins.
Treatment Information
There is no cure. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing complications. This includes physical therapy, pain management, and sometimes surgery to repair damaged joints.
