Description

A chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. A seizure is a sudden rush of electrical activity in the brain. There are many different types of seizures, varying from brief and nearly undetectable periods to long periods of vigorous shaking.

Common Symptoms

  • Seizures, which can manifest as: temporary confusion, a staring spell, uncontrollable jerking movements (convulsions), loss of consciousness or awareness, psychic symptoms like fear, anxiety, or deja vu.

Common Causes

  • Genetic influence, head trauma, brain conditions (tumors, stroke), infectious diseases (meningitis), and prenatal injury. In about half the cases, the cause is unknown.

Treatment Information

Primarily managed with anti-seizure medications. If medications are ineffective, treatments may include surgery, nerve stimulation devices, or special diets like the ketogenic diet.
