Gallbladder Cancer

Description

An uncommon cancer that begins in the gallbladder, a small, pear-shaped organ on the right side of the abdomen, just beneath the liver. It is difficult to diagnose as it often causes no specific signs or symptoms in the early stages.

Common Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain, particularly in the upper right portion of the abdomen
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Fever
  • Nausea

Common Causes

  • The cause is not clear. Chronic inflammation from conditions like gallstones is a major risk factor. Most gallbladder cancers are adenocarcinomas.

Treatment Information

Treatment depends on the stage. Early stage may be cured by surgery to remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy). For advanced cancer, chemotherapy and radiation may be used to relieve symptoms.
