Glaucoma
Description
A group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in your eye (intraocular pressure). It is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness.
Common Symptoms
- Open-angle glaucoma (most common type): Often no symptoms in early stages, gradual loss of peripheral vision.
- Acute angle-closure glaucoma: Severe eye pain, nausea and vomiting, sudden onset of visual disturbance, halos around lights, reddening of the eye.
Common Causes
- Damage to the optic nerve, usually associated with increased intraocular pressure due to inadequate fluid drainage from the eye.
Treatment Information
Treatment aims to lower eye pressure and includes prescription eye drops, oral medications, laser therapy, or surgery. Early detection is key to preventing vision loss.
