Chronic Glomerulonephritis
Description
A group of diseases that injure the part of the kidney that filters blood (called glomeruli). When the kidney is injured, it cannot get rid of wastes and extra fluid in the body. If the illness continues, the kidneys may stop working completely, resulting in kidney failure. The chronic form develops silently over several years.
Common Symptoms
- Blood or protein in the urine (hematuria, proteinuria), which may make urine look foamy
- High blood pressure
- Swelling in the face, hands, feet, and ankles (edema)
Common Causes
- Can be caused by infections (like strep throat), autoimmune diseases (like lupus), or certain genetic conditions. Sometimes the cause is unknown.
Treatment Information
Treatment depends on the cause and may include medications to control high blood pressure, reduce inflammation (corticosteroids), or suppress the immune system.
