Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA)
Description
A rare disorder that causes inflammation of the blood vessels (vasculitis) in the nose, sinuses, throat, lungs and kidneys. This inflammation restricts blood flow to these organs, potentially damaging them.
Common Symptoms
- Chronic sinus infections
- Nosebleeds
- Shortness of breath and cough
- Fever
- Joint pain
- Blood in the urine (hematuria) due to kidney involvement
Common Causes
- The cause is unknown. It is classified as an autoimmune disorder. It is associated with the presence of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) in the blood.
Treatment Information
Treatment involves medications to suppress the immune system and control inflammation, including high-dose corticosteroids and drugs like cyclophosphamide or rituximab.
