Graves' Disease
Description
An immune system disorder that results in the overproduction of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism). It is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. The immune system produces an antibody that mimics thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), causing the thyroid to overproduce hormones.
Common Symptoms
- Anxiety and irritability
- A fine tremor of your hands or fingers
- Heat sensitivity and an increase in perspiration
- Weight loss, despite normal eating habits
- Enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter)
- Bulging eyes (Graves' ophthalmopathy)
Common Causes
- An autoimmune malfunction. The exact trigger is unknown but genetics and factors like stress, infection, or pregnancy may play a role.
Treatment Information
Radioactive iodine therapy, anti-thyroid medications, beta-blockers to control symptoms, and surgery to remove the thyroid (thyroidectomy).
