Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD)

Description

A mild, contagious viral infection common in young children. It is characterized by sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet. It is most commonly caused by a coxsackievirus.

Common Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • A feeling of being unwell (malaise)
  • Painful, red, blister-like lesions on the tongue, gums, and inside of the cheeks
  • A red rash, without itching but sometimes with blistering, on the palms, soles, and sometimes the buttocks.

Common Causes

  • Infection with a virus from the Enterovirus genus, most commonly coxsackievirus A16.

Treatment Information

No specific treatment exists. Management includes pain relievers and numbing mouthwashes to help with the painful mouth sores. Good hygiene is the main form of prevention.
