Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
Description
An autoimmune disorder in which your immune system creates antibodies that attack your thyroid gland. This leads to chronic inflammation and impairs the thyroid's ability to produce hormones, most commonly resulting in an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
Common Symptoms
- Fatigue and sluggishness
- Increased sensitivity to cold
- Constipation
- Dry skin, puffy face
- Weight gain
- Muscle aches and joint pain
- Enlargement of the thyroid (goiter)
Common Causes
- The immune system attacks the thyroid gland. The exact reason this occurs is not known, but it is likely due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Treatment Information
If hypothyroidism occurs, treatment is with thyroid hormone replacement therapy, usually a daily oral medication called levothyroxine.
