Heatstroke

Description

The most serious form of heat injury, a condition caused by your body overheating, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures. This most serious form of heat injury can occur if your body temperature rises to 104 F (40 C) or higher and is a medical emergency.

Common Symptoms

  • High body temperature (104 F / 40 C or higher)
  • Altered mental state or behavior (confusion, agitation, slurred speech)
  • Hot, red, dry or damp skin
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Headache
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness

Common Causes

  • Prolonged exposure to a hot environment or strenuous activity in hot weather.

Treatment Information

Immediate emergency cooling is critical. This includes immersion in cold water, using evaporation cooling techniques, and administering IV fluids in a hospital.
