Heatstroke
Description
The most serious form of heat injury, a condition caused by your body overheating, usually as a result of prolonged exposure to or physical exertion in high temperatures. This most serious form of heat injury can occur if your body temperature rises to 104 F (40 C) or higher and is a medical emergency.
Common Symptoms
- High body temperature (104 F / 40 C or higher)
- Altered mental state or behavior (confusion, agitation, slurred speech)
- Hot, red, dry or damp skin
- Nausea and vomiting
- Rapid, strong pulse
- Headache
- Seizures
- Unconsciousness
Common Causes
- Prolonged exposure to a hot environment or strenuous activity in hot weather.
Treatment Information
Immediate emergency cooling is critical. This includes immersion in cold water, using evaporation cooling techniques, and administering IV fluids in a hospital.
