Hepatitis A
Description
A highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). It is typically a short-term illness and does not become chronic. It spreads through ingestion of contaminated food or water.
Common Symptoms
- Fatigue
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain, especially near the liver
- Dark urine
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
- Fever
Common Causes
- Infection with the hepatitis A virus (HAV), usually transmitted via the fecal-oral route, either through person-to-person contact or consumption of contaminated food or water.
Treatment Information
No specific treatment exists. Rest and managing symptoms are recommended as the liver heals on its own. A safe and effective vaccine is available for prevention.
