Hepatitis B

Description

A serious liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). For some people, the infection becomes chronic, leading to liver failure, liver cancer, or cirrhosis. It is spread through contact with infected blood and certain other body fluids.

Common Symptoms

  • Symptoms are similar to Hepatitis A, including jaundice, fatigue, and abdominal pain. Many people, especially children, have no symptoms. Chronic infection may be asymptomatic for decades.

  • Infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, or other body fluids. This can happen through sexual contact, sharing needles, or from an infected mother to her baby at birth.

Treatment Information

Acute infection is managed with supportive care. Chronic hepatitis B can be treated with antiviral medications. A vaccine is the mainstay of prevention.
