Description
A viral infection that causes liver inflammation, sometimes leading to serious liver damage. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) spreads through contaminated blood. Most people have no symptoms, and many do not know they have it until liver damage shows up decades later.
Common Symptoms
- Most acute and chronic infections are asymptomatic. If symptoms occur, they are similar to other forms of hepatitis, including fatigue and jaundice.
Common Causes
- Infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), primarily transmitted through exposure to infected blood, most commonly by sharing needles for intravenous drug use.
Treatment Information
Treated and often cured with oral antiviral drugs. There is no vaccine for hepatitis C.
