Herniated Disc
Description
A condition which refers to a problem with one of the rubbery cushions (discs) that sit between the individual bones (vertebrae) that stack to make your spine. A herniated disc occurs when some of the softer "jelly" pushes out through a tear in the tougher exterior.
Common Symptoms
- Pain in the back, arm or leg
- Numbness or tingling
- Muscle weakness. The location of symptoms depends on which disc is herniated.
Common Causes
- Most often the result of a gradual, aging-related wear and tear called disc degeneration. It can also be caused by lifting heavy objects with improper form or by sudden trauma.
Treatment Information
Most herniated discs heal on their own with conservative treatment like rest, pain relievers, and physical therapy. Epidural steroid injections or surgery may be considered if symptoms persist.
