Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS)
Description
A chronic inflammatory skin disease that causes painful, boil-like lumps under the skin. The lumps often break open, releasing pus with an unpleasant odor, and can lead to tunnels under the skin (sinus tracts) and significant scarring. It typically occurs where skin rubs together, such as the armpits, groin, and under the breasts.
Common Symptoms
- Painful, recurring lumps or abscesses
- Blackheads in pairs or a "double-barreled" pattern
- Tunnels connecting the lumps under the skin
- Scarring
Common Causes
- Develops when hair follicles become blocked and inflamed. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is not contagious. Hormones, genetics, and smoking are believed to play a role.
Treatment Information
Treatment is complex and can include topical and oral antibiotics, retinoids, corticosteroids, and biologic drugs (like adalimumab). Surgery may be needed to drain abscesses or remove affected skin.
