Hyperparathyroidism

Description

A condition in which one or more of your parathyroid glands become overactive and secrete too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). This causes the levels of calcium in your blood to rise, a condition known as hypercalcemia, which can cause a variety of health problems.

Common Symptoms

  • Osteoporosis (fragile bones)
  • Kidney stones
  • Excessive urination
  • Abdominal pain
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Depression or forgetfulness
  • Bone and joint pain

Common Causes

  • The most common cause is a noncancerous growth (adenoma) on one of the glands. It can also be caused by enlargement of two or more glands.

Treatment Information

Surgery to remove the overactive gland(s) is the most common treatment and provides a cure in most cases.
