Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)
Description
A condition in which your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism can accelerate your body's metabolism, causing unintentional weight loss and a rapid or irregular heartbeat.
Common Symptoms
- Unintentional weight loss
- Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
- Nervousness, anxiety, and irritability
- Tremor in your hands and fingers
- Increased sensitivity to heat
- Increased appetite
- Difficulty sleeping
Common Causes
- The most common cause is Graves' disease, an autoimmune disorder. Other causes include thyroid nodules and thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid).
Treatment Information
