Impetigo
Description
A common and highly contagious skin infection that mainly affects infants and young children. It usually appears as reddish sores on the face, especially around the nose and mouth and on the hands and feet. The sores burst and develop honey-colored crusts.
Common Symptoms
- Red sores that quickly rupture, ooze for a few days and then form a yellowish-brown crust.
- Itching and soreness.
Common Causes
- Infection with one of two types of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes. The bacteria can enter the body through a cut, scrape, or insect bite.
Treatment Information
Treated with antibiotic ointments or creams. For more widespread sores, oral antibiotics may be necessary.
