Chronic Insomnia
Description
A common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. Chronic insomnia occurs at least three nights a week for three months or longer and is not linked to another health problem.
Common Symptoms
- Difficulty falling asleep
- Waking up during the night
- Waking up too early
- Not feeling well-rested after a night's sleep
- Daytime fatigue or sleepiness
- Irritability, depression, or anxiety
- Difficulty paying attention or focusing
Common Causes
- Stress, irregular sleep schedules, poor sleep habits, mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, physical illnesses, and medications.
Treatment Information
Improving sleep hygiene is the first step. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is highly effective. Prescription or over-the-counter sleep aids may be used short-term.
