Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)

Description

Refers to a large group of disorders that cause progressive scarring (fibrosis) of the lung tissue. The scarring associated with ILD eventually affects your ability to breathe and get enough oxygen into your bloodstream.

Common Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath, especially with exertion
  • A dry, non-productive cough
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Clubbing of the fingers or toes (widening and rounding of the tips)

Common Causes

  • Can be caused by long-term exposure to hazardous materials (like asbestos), autoimmune diseases (like rheumatoid arthritis), certain medications, or the cause can be unknown (as in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis).

Treatment Information

Lung scarring is irreversible. Treatment aims to slow the disease progression, manage symptoms, and improve quality of life. This may include medications like corticosteroids and antifibrotic agents, oxygen therapy, and pulmonary rehabilitation. A lung transplant may be an option.
