Kidney Cancer (Renal Cell Carcinoma)
Description
A disease that starts in the kidneys. The most common type of kidney cancer in adults is renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that filter waste from the blood and produce urine.
Common Symptoms
- Blood in the urine (hematuria)
- A lump or mass on the side or lower back
- Persistent back pain
- Loss of appetite
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fever
Common Causes
- The exact cause is unclear. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, having advanced kidney disease, and certain inherited syndromes.
Treatment Information
Surgery to remove part or all of the affected kidney is the primary treatment for contained cancer. For cancer that has spread, treatments include targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and sometimes radiation.
